Updates
Keep Samba current so you get fixes (including update-check and media behaviour) and new features. Updates are delivered as normal installers from the Samba website - not as a silent background patcher that replaces files without you noticing.
Automatic checks
Section titled “Automatic checks”Edit -> Preferences… -> General -> Updates
| Control | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Automatically check for latest updates | When enabled, Samba periodically compares the installed version to the online release manifest (latest.json) |
Automatic checks can stay quiet when you are already on the latest build. They need internet access to the Samba update host.
Show machines: turn automatic checks off if operators must not see update prompts during a performance. Update between shows instead.
Details also on General preferences.
Check for updates (manual)
Section titled “Check for updates (manual)”- Help & Support -> Check for updates…
- Samba fetches
latest.json, compares versions, and shows whether an update is available - If a newer build exists, follow the dialog to download / open the installer
Manual Check for updates always presents the update dialog (even when you are already current), so you can confirm connectivity and the published version.
If the check fails
Section titled “If the check fails”A message like Could not reach the update server usually means network block, offline machine, or (on older builds) the apex-domain 301 to www issue. From 2.5.177 onward, in-app checks prefer www.samba-sync.com so that redirect does not block the client.
Full recovery steps: Troubleshooting.
Installers (Windows and macOS)
Section titled “Installers (Windows and macOS)”You can always install or upgrade by downloading from the website:
| Platform | Package |
|---|---|
| Windows (64-bit) | .exe installer |
| macOS Apple Silicon (M1 / M2 / M3 / …) | arm64 .dmg |
| macOS Intel | x86_64 .dmg |
Run the new installer over the existing install. Projects and user settings live outside the application folder and are kept across upgrades.
If you are unsure which Mac build you need: Apple menu -> About This Mac (M-series chip = Apple Silicon).
More install detail: Install.
Recommended workflow
Section titled “Recommended workflow”| Machine type | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Day-to-day programming PC | Leave automatic checks on; use Check for updates… when you want an explicit confirm |
| Locked show playback PC | Automatic checks off; install a known-good build between performances |
| Offline / air-gapped | Copy the matching installer from another machine; do not rely on in-app check |
After upgrading, confirm the version under Help & Support -> About Samba.
